Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile and the spatial distribution of suicide deaths in the state of Sergipe.
Methods: It was an ecological temporal series study with data of the Mortality Information System (SIM) about suicide deaths occurring between 2000 and 2015. Deaths recorded as voluntary self-inflicted injuries were considered as suicide. Suicide rates were estimated and adjusted by age in the population above 9 years. Temporal trends by sex and age range were analyzed using the simple linear regression model. For the spatial analysis, we used Kernel estimator by TerraView software 4.2.2.
Results: We identified 1560 suicide cases in Sergipe state between 2000 and 2015. The averaged was 97.5 cases per year. We observed also that the suicide rate has increased 102.3% (2.69/100,000 inhabitants in 2000, to 5.44 in 2015). The suicide cases happened predominantly among males 1160 (74.35%), single (64.7%) and brown ethnicity (66.5%). The temporal trends was significantly growing for the general population, male and adults. The spatial analysis allowed the map constructions that showed the regions with the highest occurrence of suicide.
Conclusion: We observed a growing trends on suicide in Sergipe state and the spatial analysis was an important tool that showed the areas of higher suicide occurrence.
